One mat, every stage: tummy time to toddler
People sometimes ask whether a play mat is worth it when babies grow so fast. Fair question. Here is what one patch of floor has done in our home, month by month.
Months 0 to 4: the stage
It is a tummy time mat, a nappy-change station when the changing table is two rooms away, and the place you put the baby down with both hands free for the first time all day.
Months 5 to 9: the gym
Rolling, pivoting, rocking on all fours, the first proper crawl. This is the phase where foam thickness stops being a spec and becomes the difference between a laugh and a wail.
Months 10 to 18: the track
Cruising, standing, the road print becoming an actual road with actual toy cars on it. The mat stops being somewhere the baby is placed and starts being somewhere the baby goes.
Years 2 and 3: the territory
Building-block cities, picnic spot, reading corner, wrestling ring. JJ's niece is three and still claims the Fold XPE as her side of the room when she visits.
That is the answer, really. A good mat is not a baby product. It is the floor, upgraded, for the years the floor matters most.
