Play mat safety: what we check before anything ships

A play mat is the one thing your baby touches more than any toy you own. It deserves more scrutiny than most products get. Here is the checklist we run on Nuromi mats, and what you can check yourself on any mat you are considering.

The backing

Flip the mat over. If the underside is smooth, it will skate on tile the first time your baby pushes up hard. Ours uses an anti-skid dotted backing because a crawling baby generates surprising force at surprising angles. We know. We have the video.

The edges

Run your hand along every edge. Binding should be stitched tight with no loose threads - small fingers find loose threads with magical accuracy. Our Soft Foam edges are bound in cream and double-stitched, partly for safety, partly because JJ would not ship it otherwise.

The surface

Babies lick their mats. This is not a maybe. Surfaces should be free of anything you would not want in a mouth, and should wipe clean without a chemistry degree. Test a corner with a wet wipe before the first use, whatever brand you buy.

The smell test

Open the packaging and wait a day. A faint new-product smell that fades in 24 hours is normal. Anything sharp or persistent is a return, not an air-out. Trust your nose - it evolved for exactly this job.
